We make starting a UK business feel obvious
UK Business Ideas exists because most startup advice is written for a different country, a different tax system and a different budget. We fix that.

Fewer dreams, more launches
We started as a spreadsheet shared between friends in Manchester — a list of businesses you could actually begin while studying or working full time. It grew into a library of 500+ ideas, each one costed, researched and pressure-tested against the UK market.
Today more than 12,000 founders use the platform to choose an idea, plan the numbers and handle the legal setup without paying for a consultant.
What we will never do
- Promise unrealistic income from a business with no customers
- Copy US advice that ignores HMRC, VAT and Companies House
- Hide the real startup costs behind a paywall

Freelance Design, LondonQuestions we get every week
Yes. Every idea page, guide and calculator is free to use with no account required. We fund the site through occasional partner tools we would recommend anyway.
Most people start as a sole trader because registration is free and the paperwork is light. A limited company usually makes sense once profits pass roughly £30,000–£40,000 or when clients require it.
Student visa rules generally prohibit self-employment, but there are legal routes such as the Graduate route or a Start-up/Innovator Founder visa. Our International Students category explains what applies to each situation.
We look at UK search demand, competition, gross margin, licensing requirements and realistic time-to-first-customer. Anything that only works overseas, or relies on inflated income claims, gets rejected.
It is legally required for a limited company and strongly recommended for sole traders. It keeps bookkeeping clean and makes Self Assessment far quicker.
